Credit cards, ATMs, how do they work?

I got so amazed since i got my UBA ATM card as it had become so convenient to do my banking activies at almost anytime of the day. I'm begining to get in love with all these card technologies that i'd like to know how ATMs, credit cards work. How come one can easily use them to withdraw money from a machine?
