I have a T-mobile phone which I would want to use with an MTN sim. I have tried inserting it but it doesn't read the network. Is there a way I can go around it?

What you need to do in order to allow your T-mobile phone to be usable on other networks is to unlock it. Perhaps your question should have been how to unlock a T-mobile phone. There is an explanation here on how to do that:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5030660_unlock-tmobile-phone.htmlUnlocking Your T-Mobile Phone Through Your Carrier
Step 1
Call T-Mobile customer service at 1-800-TMobile. You will need to provide your account information. Typically, this is just your phone number, name and any password you have on your account. Have your account number on hand as well.Step 2
Ask the customer service rep for your device's "Unlock Code." If the rep says he can't provide that code, tell him you know that other users have received their unlock codes after 120 days of use. Typically, this will not be a problem.Step 3
Follow the "Unlock Code" steps given to you by T-Mobile. Typically, these codes include pressing a variation of keys in a specified order. Follow the directions exactly as given to you. Try inserting an SIM card from another provider if available to you. If your signal strength bar appears with the new SIM card, then your unlock process was successful.
Unlocking Your T-Mobile Cell Phone - Purchasing Unlock CodesStep 1
Find a website, such as GSMliberty (see Resources), that sells cell phone unlock codes.Step 2
Find your cell phone on the website you are purchasing your code from.
Step 3
Enter your phone's IMEI number when purchasing your unlock code. The IMEI number can be found on the back of your phone under the battery cover and battery. This code will determine your unlock code and is needed in most cases to complete the process.
Step 4
Wait for your unlock code to be delivered to your email. Follow the directions exactly as they appear, and then test your code's success with another provider's SIM card, if available. Your phone should now be unlocked.

For unlocking you must contact your telecom service provider or a code provider like http://www.theunlockarena.com/ where you can unlock it forever use.
