I can log into my hostgator account manually by going to mysitename.com/cpanel and entering in my login details but I have not been able to connect to my account using Dreamweaver's FTP.

It keeps giving this error

"An FTP error occurred - cannot open remote folder. Access denied. This file may not exist, or there could be a permission problem.".

If you are sure the file or folder exists at that location, then it may most likely be a permission problem depending on how you want to connect. Here is what I suggest that you do:

Go to manage sites and edit
Click on Remote info and select FTP

The host directory should be public_html and not public-html or pucbic_html
Enter your current username and password and select the save checkbox
Also Make sure you check these options
Use passive FTP
Use Firewall
Now click on test

You should get the response:
"Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 connected to your Web server successfully"
